Hundereds of scientists have worked for 8 years to understand one of the most important forces that change our planet: human impacts on land cover and land use. Their contributions span the natural and social sciences and apply state of the art techniques for understanding the earth: satelite remote sensing, geographic information sytems, modeling and advanced computing. If the show you’d like to catch up on has been out for a while you may want to consider buying your episode in mp3 format. The Earth System is the unified set of physical, chemical, biological and social components, processes and interactions that together determine the state and dynamics of Planet Earth, including its biodata and its human occupants.

Earth System Science is the study of the Earth System, with an emphasis on observing, understanding and predicting global environmental changes involving interactions between land, atmosphere, water, ice, biosphere, societies, technologies and economies. 

A Strategy for Global Environmental Change Research in Africa

The African Network for Earth System Science (AfricanNESS) science plan and implementation strategy “A Strategy for Global Environmental Change Research in Africa” has been completed and is now available for download. The plan focuses on four top-level issues: food and nutritional security; water resources; health; and ecosystem integrity. Framed around these issues, the science plan describes a strategy for global environmental change research in Africa that concentrates on eight thematic clusters: rainfall, land cover, livelihoods, cities, diseases and pests, Africa and the earth system, marine, and integrated development. Examples of possible research programs are provided for each of these areas. Finally, the plan outlines a way of implementing and organizing a network of earth system scientists in Africa, and connecting them to scientists around the world. The science plan was developed over a period of three years through the collective efforts of many African scientists, as well as colleagues from outside the African continent. The editors gratefully acknowledge the support from the US National Science Foundation, the South Africa National Research Foundation, IGBP, ESSP, START, and the ICSU Regional Office for Africa. Welcome – WCRP Director

The ESSP would like to welcome Dr. Ghassem R. Asrar, who recently took up his duties as Director of the World Climate Research Programme. Dr. Asrar has an outstanding career at NASA as Associate Administrator of the Office of Earth Science from 1998 to 2004 and then, until January 2005, as Deputy Associate Administrator for the NASA Science Directorate where he was responsible for a broad range of earth observation satellites. He then served as Deputy Administrator for Natural Resources and Agricultural Systems with the Agricultural Research Service, of the U.S. Department of Agriculture from 2006 – 2008.

The third meeting of the Scientific Steering Committee was held in Beijing on 6 and 7 August. Key points of the meeting were an in depth review of the workplan for 2007 and 2008, a policy on project development (rather than endorsement) and considerations on how to strengthen the capacity of working groups and of the IPO to support those activities. Cooperation with other programs was planned, in particular with iLEAPS, NEESPI, CEOP, AIMES, and IHDP. From 1 October 2007 onwards, Dr. Ailikun will be Interim Executive Director of MAIRS. Dr. Frits Penning de Vries will return to his home base in Wageningen, the Netherlands. RESEARCH PROJECTS AND REPORTS From 9 to 12 August, the International Workshop on semi-arid land surface-atmosphere Interaction was held. It was coorganized by CEOP (Coordinated Energy and Water Cycle Observation Project), MAIRS, the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences-CAS, and Lanzhou University.

This workshop was supported by Ministry of Science and Technology on China and Chinese Academy of Sciences. Over 80 scientists from Asia, US and EU participated in the workshop. The main goal of the meeting was to exchange new information on observation methods and on research in semi-arid regions and strengthen the collaboration among the scientists and projects and countries. Six sessions were set up to discuss the hottest scientific topics in the semi-arid study: 1) climate and environmental change in semi-arid regions, 2) land surface-atmosphere interactions, 3) monitoring, observation and data system, 4) modeling, 5) aerosols, cloud and hydrological cycle, 6) impact of aridity in arid and semi-arid region. The scarce water resource and vulnerable ecosystem make the semi-arid region sensitive to the global/regional climate change and human activity has a distinct impact on the environment as well. Understanding the mechanism of land-surface processes in semi-arid region is the most important step to improve the capacity of model simulation and projection of the region. The intercomparation study of different semi-arid regions now involves scientists from US, China, Mongolia and Japan; more participants are sought from South Asia and Central Asia. The MAIRS semi-arid study is focused on the human-natural interaction in the region. Some recommendations suggested the need for more social-economic inputs to MAIRS semi-arid study to understand the feedbacks between human drivers and natural processes. We introduced a new initiative of a network in arid and semi-arid East Asia about observations and research on land-surface, hydrological cycle, aerosol, and ecosystem. Many institutes and scientists from China are making great efforts to establish enhanced observations. Further use of remote sensing products will help in understanding the whole picture of water cycle and waterenergy balance in the region. MAIRS will collaborate closely with CEOP, MAHASRI, iLEAPS and NEESPI, ARIDnet in the future. The activity will also contribute to the AMY/WCRP program.  Anthropogenic Impacts on the Asian monsoon’ in the city of Nanjing, from 21-24 April 2008. This subject lies at the heart of the research that MAIRS promotes: is there evidence that the monsoon is changing?, do human activities contribute to it? and what needs to be researched urgently to prepare for adaptation to changes? We will scrutinize evidence with observations, modeling and field evidence. This workshop underlines the key characteristics of MAIRS: addressing the human-environment interactions in an integrative approach. The scientific committee, headed by Prof. Dr. Congbin Fu, consists of Bin Wang, Shaw Chen Liu, Jun Matsumoto, Tetsuzo Yasunari, V. Ramaswary, V.K. Dadhwal, P. Kabat, Jiaguo Qi, Tong Zhu, Yongkang Xue and William K.M. Lau. We hope that many scientists from ESSP and GEC-projects, as well as others, will participate and make the workshop a large success. You can go to the tailgating party with your friends prior to the game, enjoy great food, and have a great time with your friends, and sit out in the parking lot when everyone goes into the game, and still get to enjoy the game. You do not need to spend the money on a ticket for admission into the stadium, to still be able tot get the stadium experience, right from your computer, right outside the stadium.

The technologies available today, allow you to stream a live game, right onto your computer. In fact, many sites are free for this technology, and being right outside the stadium, you will still get to be around the fans, and get to cheer your favorite team on. So, if you want to enjoy the tailgating fun and food, and still get to see the game, but at a much lower price than what your friends paid to get into the stadium, consider the option of using a site which allows you to stream live games, when they are happening, straight to your computer.

We really are living in an information age, and for me one of the coolest aspects of that is how accessible everything is, all the time. I’m the sort of person that has to start a TV or book series at the beginning and then I must see every episode, read every chapter. If I can’t, then I don’t even bother starting on the series. Usually this meant that as a kid I wouldn’t watch a whole lot of television. Sure, Saturday morning cartoons, maybe a show or two in the evening if my Mom and Dad let me but I was a busy kid and I didn’t have the luxury of rearranging my schedule to see the shows I really wanted to see.
Now I don’t have that problem. Online I have my pick of providers for content. You can stream some shows directly from their network sites, with many offering web exclusive features like games, “webisodes”, comics and community forums. Away from these network sites there are aggregates, generally costing a monthly fee, that compile movies and shows into large databases. Despite the cost these services are the most convenient, providing a much wider selection. Different businesses are going to specialize in different things. An aggregate that keeps up to date television shows will most likely have a more narrow selection of movies, and vice versa. By mixing and matching between these sorts of companies I was able to find a great combination that lets me see movies and watch up to date television any time I want, for less than twenty dollars more than I pay for internet alone.
The services are out there, and with wireless hotspots, internet cafes, wireless aircards and 4G cell phone connectivity television really is available anywhere these days either for free or at minimal costs.
